Senior IT Operations Engineer - San Francisco, CA

We are a dynamic startup that has been around for just over 2 years. We were founded by former executives and un-naturally intelligent engineers from Amazon, eBay, Plumtree, MySpace, and a few other innovative companies. We have secured a total of 2 rounds of angel funding all without blowing ourselves out of the water, we are after-all still in stealth mode. 

We are looking for an engineering Prodigy, someone who has built web scale infrastructures and escalation/monitoring procedures. The perfect candidate will have experience maintaining proprietary applications in a high performance production environment. This Operations Guru will also have the uncanny ability to pick up new concepts and methods on the fly.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Engineering to continually polish and refine our architecture and scalability
  • Plan, design, and implement the congruous infrastructure necessary to achieve stability, integrity, and conducive operations of the information systems that support our Disaster Recovery functions.
  • Take the vision of our IT group and construct it into dependable Disaster Recovery solutions.
  • Command our data centers
  • Own/manage vendor relationships
  • Scales systems/centers up, so as to maintain a steady state maximum @ < 40% of capacity
  • Manage outages/emergencies eliminating or reducing the impact on the customer
  • Command all facets of servers, including Java-application servers
  • Oversee internal systems: email, Wiki, tickets, etc (Jira, Confluence)
  • Monitor system performance, from bandwidth to response times
  • Participate in on call rotations
  • Explore and recommend ways to efficiently enhance processing time, reliability, scalability and ease of development
  • Create and maintain installation, incident, and FAQ documentation using Confluence
  • Take part in planning efforts for disaster recovery, capacity expansion, component upgrading, and system hardening
  • Collaborate with the Engineering and Client Services teams to maintain data center operation procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's/Masters in Computer Science or Engineering field
  • 6+ years of internet systems administration experience
  • Expertise in Linux administration: configuration/administration of apache/tomcat, Apache Ant, and Shell Scripts
  • Advanced networking skills: experience with IPSEC VPN's, Load Balancer configuration – F5, Cisco, Foundry, ARP, and Ethernet.
  • Solid knowledge of IP telephony systems
  • Understanding of storage solutions
  • Experience in managing data centers with 1000+ nodes
  • Experience to collaborating with outside IT vendors
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment
  • Self starter and a large brain capacity!
  • Superb communication skills, both oral and written
  • Understanding of one or more of the following languages: PHP, Java, C/C++, Perl

Additional Skills:

  • Skilled in SQL, Postgres is a plus
  • Experience with Oracle database administration is a plus
  • Background in performance tuning and testing
  • Experience in software development would be great
