SUMMARY:  Under the direction of the site or shop Foreman, the responsibilities of the Apprentice position includes assisting and learning the assembly, installation, and repair of plumbing, water flow, and drainage systems in accordance with city, state and federal plumbing codes.  The Apprentice will be enrolled in a BAT Certified Apprenticeship Program, which includes attending two evening classes per week, two semesters per year.  This position promotes Brand DNA initiatives by demonstrating Honest, Performance Everyday, and keeping HPE values top of mind:  Integrity, Commitment, Collaboration, and Excellence.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Primary responsibilities include learning & assisting Journeyman by:
  • Assisting in installing and maintaining plumbing systems.
  • Learn to read blueprints and drawings to determine exact specifications and where plumbing system will be installed.
  • Assisting in determining water supply networks and waste drainage systems.
  • Assisting in the install of systems used to transport water, waste, gases, or fluids.
  • Cutting openings in structures in preparation for pipes.
  • Learning which materials are needed for installation, including type and size of pipe.
  • Installing supports and hangers for pipe, fixtures and equipment.
  • Assembling and install valves and fittings
  • Assembling pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
  • Assisting in installing other plumbing equipment, such as sinks, tubs, toilets, water heaters, air conditioners, appliances, and trim.
  • Measuring, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angle
  • Observing pressure gauges to fix leaks.  Test pipe systems and fix leaks.
  • Repair and maintain water treatment equipment.
  • Assist with all labor work associated within our scope of the job
  • Ensure all installations, and repairs are properly aligned, supported, and grade.
Participates in Apprenticeship Program by:
  • Complete On-The-Job-Training (OJT) as required by Standards of Apprenticeship
  • Regularly attend required apprenticeship classes
  • Complete all assigned coursework and assignments
 
1st Year:
  • Have a basic understanding of plumbing as a profession.
  • Get an introduction into plumbing safety and have basic understanding of the tools of the trade.
  • Understand basic mathematics and introduction to plumbing drawings.
  • Understand types and uses of plumbing fittings and fixtures.
  • Introduction to drain waste and vent, and water distribution with some plumbing code application.
 
 
2nd Year
  • Learn and apply math theories applicable to the plumbing profession.
  • Read and work with construction drawings.
  • Install pipe hangers and supports; modify structural members; and identify and install common types of fire-stopping materials.
  • Use plans and other sheets; install and test DWV piping.
  • Use surveyor’s level or transit level; install roof, floor, and area drains.
  • Identify basic types of valves; describe different pressure ratings for valves; and demonstrate the ability to service various types of valves.
3rd Year
  • Learn and practice applied plumbing mathematics.
  • Learn sizing of water supply systems, understand potable water treatment and backflow prevention.
  • Understand types of venting and sizing DWV and storm drainage systems.
  • Understand types and uses of sewage pumps and sumps pumps, corrosive resistant piping and compressed air pipe systems.
4th Year
  • Have a working knowledge of Blueprints and Submittals.
  • Learn proper installation of Fixture Carriers, Water Pressure Boost systems and Recirculation systems.
  • Understand Solar and Hydronic systems
  • Understand Servicing Piping systems, Fixtures and Appliances
  • Learn about Private Water Supply and Private Waste Disposal systems
  • Second Semester is devoted to Learning Plumbing Code – From History of codes to Chapter by Chapter instruction of current IPC in preparation for Journeyman exam
Maintains safe, clean, and secure work environment by:
  • Keeping work areas clean and orderly
  • Ensuring proper PPE equipment is worn
  • Facilitating the proper disposal and/or recycling of unusable equipment, scrap, etc. following HPE policy
  • Complying with HPE’s EHS, and OSHA procedures, rules and regulations
 
Promotes Company values by  
  • Working safely; following HPE’s safety program
  • Reporting any observed unsafe conditions to foreman or Risk & Safety Manager
  • Dressing appropriately for the position
  • Having HPE’s best interests in mind when conducting business on behalf of HPE
 
Contributes to team effort by
  • Seeking out ways to help others accomplish related job results as and where needed
  • Performing other duties as delegated by Supervisor
 
General Construction and Procedural Knowledge:
  • Applicable construction standards including system  installation methods, procedures, and sequencing
  • HPE Safety & Quality program requirements and procedures
  • Manual dexterity and ability to use the tools of the plumbing trade
 
General Trade Skills:
  • Ability to take and follow precise orders form supervisors
  • Ability to listen very carefully and communicate effectively
  • Perform basic system layout activities
  • Beginner to intermediate soldering, brazing, welding, and plastic pipe fusion skills
  • Blueprint reading, interpretation, and application skills
  • Safe and proper use of hand and power tools
  • Basic math skills and use of tape measure/level
  • Demonstrate willingness to work with others in a team environment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Additional HPE “Incidental Training” as required
  • Enrollment in HPE BAT Certified Apprenticeship Program
