Job Title: Plumbing & Piping Estimator

SUMMARY: Accurate cost estimates are a driving force behind the financial strength and growth of HPE. Estimators gather, analyze and compile information and factors that influence price such as:  material, labor, equipment and subcontractors. HPE estimators are responsible for generating competitive, accurate and profit driven cost estimates as well as other construction-related activities to assist in bidding on or determining the price of a project. HPE estimators work with clients, architects, engineers, subcontractors and suppliers to plan cost factors for building projects, to build and maintain relationships and to leverage those relationships to award bids. They are highly skilled in analyzing blueprints, specifications, proposals and other documents in order to prepare cost, value engineering and labor estimates in a timely manner.   
Planning, structuring and developing estimates
  • Creating detailed cost estimates based on material and labor take-off, and vendor/sub-contractor quotes
  • Capable of dry or wet side take-off of mechanical systems utilizing QuickPen software
  • Developing detailed scope based on the final construction documents or the preconstruction’s design-build scope
  • Developing the scope of work for sub-contractors and vendors
  • Development of potential competitors list
  • Confirming scope with vendors/sub-contractors through quotations for materials/services to ensure overall scope is complete
  • Participate in pre-bid meeting with internal and external stakeholders to review scope, strategy, etc.
Effective transition to Contract Administration and Operations
  • Produce final estimate and cost phasing
  • Participate in review and approval of sub contracts/PO’s
  • Support Project Manager as required during the construction phase
Achieve Financial Objectives by:
  • Identifying possible cost saving opportunities that will occur on specific projects
  • Ensuring the proposed scope aligns with the project requirements (specifications and drawings)
  • Identifying labor and scope risks and review with manager
Contributes to team effort by:
  • Preparing accurate and complete bids with minimal input from immediate supervisor
  • Providing technical assistance and estimating support to other departments when needed
  • Working with, training and coordinating the activities of lesser skilled personnel
  • Seeking out ways to help others accomplish related job results as and where needed
  • Performing other duties as delegated by Manager or VP Project Development

  • Value Engineering Techniques
  • Costs, budgets, work breakdown structure, normalization
  • Construction industry laws, regulations, policies and practices
  • Project Development department function, objectives, and processes
  • Construction and engineering documents related to mechanical systems installation (drawings, dimensions, technical specifications)
  • Professional communication and selling techniques (written, oral, email; tact, diplomacy, and influence)
  • Engineering document reading, quantification/take off from engineering documents
  • Read, analyze and interprets plans, specifications, contract documents, control drawings, service bulletins, technical procedure manuals, equipment specifications and governmental regulations
  • Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mechanical and mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Produce quality work with minimal errors
  • An Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or relevant experience consistent with 5+yrs.  Estimating and cost control exp. with estimating experience related to plumbing, process piping, equipment, and HVAC piping and sheetmetal
  • 5+ years experience including Project Management, Field Operations, Estimating, Design and Preconstruction in the bidding and design of complex mechanical solutions
  • Advanced in Microsoft applications and QuickPen estimating software
