General Overview
This position supports the Corporate Finance and Planning team, a passionate and engaged group with more than 30 finance professionals. The department is responsible for financial accounting, reporting, and planning for RI and TRF including the international offices, associate foundations and fiscal agents. From “Record to Report” this encompasses financial management and monitoring, monthly and annual financial statements, tax and investment accounting, financial analysis and preparation of financial impact statements, as well as budgeting and forecasting for executive management, committees, Directors, Trustees, and secretariat staff. These activities support planning and strategic decision-making activities while providing quality financial controls and services.
The Staff Accountant/Analyst provides core accounting and analyst duties as detailed below.
You will have
  • Bachelor’s degree (Accounting or Finance preferred). CPA or advanced degree a plus.
  • Minimum three years of accounting or finance experience as an accountant and/or analyst
  • Excellent Excel skills
  • Strong attention to detail and a focus on accuracy
  • Good communication skills; diplomatic with a strong sense of service
  • Inquisitive attitude with a desire to learn more and inclined to ask questions
  • Familiarity with month and year-end close processes and financial statements
  • Experience performing monthly journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Flexibility; willingness to work late to meet deadlines when needed
  • Experience with the following software (preferred): SAP Business Objects, PeopleSoft, nVision, MS Excel, Macros, MS PowerPoint

You Will Be Responsible For
Accounting Activities
  • Prepare monthly journal entries, bank and account reconciliations
  • Provide support for the monthly and annual closes processes
  • Provide support for internal and external audits
  • Prepare tax reporting to compile schedules and support for IRS Form 990 (Exempt Income Tax Return), IRS Form 990-T (Report of Exempt Organizations Unrelated Business Income Tax), and AG990-IL (Illinois Charitable Organization Annual Report)
  • Track and report on key initiative activities by working with staff and project managers
  • Perform accounting research on financial activities as directed
  • Contribute to knowledge base regarding non-profit accounting standards (GAAP) and develop recommendations to changes in accounting policies and procedures accordingly
Analysis and Budgeting
  • Support of department efforts to ensure reporting integrity, primarily via monthly responsibility reporting and review processes
  • Review board and trustee decisions relevant to budget preparation and reporting responsibilities, and overall financial reporting policies and procedures
  • Analyze department budget variances monthly and work with business managers to prepare explanations as required
  • Assist the development of the budget and forecasts by performing analytical tasks
  • Assist in the development of key analytics/performance measurements and financial presentations that are given to senior leaders
  • Assist in the quality control to ensure accuracy, consistency and integrity of all reporting
  • Review department budget submissions for reasonableness and work with department managers or their budget administrators during budget development to assist in quality control and timeliness
Process Improvements, Planning and Coordinating, and Projects
  • Evaluate and propose process enhancements appropriate to responsibilities
  • Support team and department projects/assignments, planning and coordination activities, and administrative tasks
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures
