Custodian/Building Maintenance (Level I & Level II)
 
Summary:
Custodians perform routine maintenance of building and grounds with assurance that a clean and safe environment is achieved and ensuring the Head Start Performance Standards and licensing requirements are met. Serve as back-up Custodian in absence of other Custodians for absences or vacancies and assigned to various locations to check on a location or perform various tasks as directed by Facility Supervisor or Facility Coordinator.
Level II Custodians will complete all essential duties and responsibilities of Level I as well as additional custodial, building and agency maintenance duties.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Level I & Level II):
Ability to work at a consistent, steady and quick pace.
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, dusts and vacuums designated areas of facility.
Empties trash and garbage containers.
Maintains building, performing minor repairs and routine painting and other tasks as assigned. Examples include, but not limited to the following: furniture repair, changing light bulbs/fixtures, minor repairs to playground equipment and etc.
Room set-up for meetings, as requested.
Assist with deliveries; unloading and distributing supplies or equipment as needed.
Responds to custodial/maintenance emergencies at assigned site, as necessary.
Removes snow and ice and debris from sidewalks including use of snow blower. Spread salt on sidewalks and entryways as needed.
Follows agency procedures with regard to ordering and using cleaning supplies.
Operate floor care powered equipment including, but not limited to stripper, buffer, etc.
Replaces and/or cleans various air conditioning filters or other filters where needed.
Notifies appropriate management concerning needs for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating and ventilating equipment.
Mows lawn, trims shrubbery, and cultivates flowers, as assigned.
Follows agency procedures with regard to cleaning schedules and supplies, and all custodial/maintenance related procedures.
Assist with safety and maintenance assessments and completion of periodic checklists.
Performs minor maintenance duties as assigned.
Substitutes for other custodial/maintenance staff for absences or vacancies.
Other duties as assigned.
 
Job Description: Custodian (Level I & Level II)
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Level II):
Above Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Level I and:
Washing and detailing agency vehicles.
Responds to custodial/maintenance emergencies at various locations as directed.
Removes snow and ice from parking lots using agency vehicles equipped with snow plow and salt spreader.
Performs major maintenance duties as assigned including, but not limited to replacing VCT, patching or replacing drywall, remove/replace sinks and toilets, replacing light ballast, etc.
Operate zero turn riding mowers and transport equipment with agency trucks and trailers.
Operate power equipment including but not limited to mini bobcat, high lift, etc.
Operate floor care powered equipment including, but not limited to stripper, buffer, etc.
Operate building maintenance power equipment including, but not limited to electric drill, saw, stapler, etc.
Assist with agency deliveries; unloading and distributing supplies or equipment as needed.
On-call rotation for night and weekend emergencies.
 
Education and/or Experience
Applicants must meet the following basic essential job qualifications for consideration for Custodian Level 1:
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Ability to read limited number of two-and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Some knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, able to utilize email and ability to learn agency’s maintenance software.
  • Reliable transportation to/from work
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needs require
  • Valid driver’s license and insurability by agency’s automobile insurance company
  • Abilities to climb or balance: stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work in wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; all outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Applicants with the following qualifications are preferred:
High School Diploma or GED
 
Job Description: Custodian (Level I & Level II)
  • Training/certification in plumbing, construction, electrical, flooring, maintenance or other
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish skills in reading, writing and speaking
 
Applicants must meet the above basic qualifications and the following for consideration for Custodian Level 2:
  • 3 year’s work experience in custodial/building maintenance field
  • General knowledge and experience in plumbing, electrical, carpentry and operating small equipment such as bobcat, mini backhoe, zero turn mowers and backing a 12-14 foot trailer
