Title:                         Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineer

Reports To:             Studio Leader / Studio assigned upper level designer or engineer
I. Summary
Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineers work under general direction, applying their skills and expertise to generate solutions that require development or sustainment of new or improved techniques, procedures, or products. Responsibilities include assisting with planning, conducting, and evaluating approaches to meet project objectives in a timely, cost-effective fashion.
II. Essential Duties & Responsibilities 
Core Function
  • Perform engineering tasks and work with designers to produce projects in design. 
  • Assist CA representative in reviewing submittals and answering questions from projects in the field.
  • On time and dependable.

  • Able to submit timesheets in timely manner.
  • Able to use and understand office equipment technology such as phones, copiers, plotters, scanners and computers.

Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineering
  • Able to perform basic plumbing and fire protection drafting with minimal direction.
  • Able to create and print drawings. 
  • Able to draft plumbing and fire protection based on comments and markups.
  • Able to draft and digitize plumbing and fire protection existing conditions.
  • Able to draft, digitize, and convert plumbing and fire protection field notes to CAD.
  • Provide lessons learned feedback.
  • Identify training topics.
  • Assist with plumbing and fire protection document template management.
  • Understand basic plumbing and fire protection principals used in design.
  • Able to layout basic domestic water, hot water, waste and vent, storm, natural gas, medical gas, and sprinkler head systems.
  • Able to use AutoCAD and Revit design software.
  • Able to edit simple stick on specifications.
  • Assist with RFI review and response.
  • Assist with change order review and response.
  • Attend Plumbing and Fire Protection department meetings
  • Intermediate working knowledge of Plumbing and Fire Protection codes.
  • Able to follow and work with design checklists.
  • Able to follow and work with review checklists.
  • Capable of small scale project designs (<2000 s.f. / less complex design / toilet room and mop sink)
  • Able to coordinate plumbing and fire protection utilities with municipalities with direction.
  • Assist with project field visits.
  • Capable of performing drawing revisions.
  • Capable of producing drawing sketches.
  • Capable of performing peer drawing reviews.
  • Participates in company technical trainings.
  • Able to provide pump design layout and connections
  • Able to layout basic vacuum waste systems.
  • Able to layout basic compressed air systems.
  • Capable of understanding the intricacies of new, existing, and demolition work and how they relate to each other within the design.
  • Assist with job proposal drafts.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities 
There may be direct supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.  Studio directors may assign plumbing and fire protection designers or plumbing and fire protection co-ops to be under engineer’s supervision.

Professional Knowledge
Possession of a designated level of technical engineering skill or knowledge and the ability to keep up with current developments and trends in areas of expertise.  May be acquired through academic, apprenticeship or on-the-job training or a combination of these.   Possession of knowledge of statutes/codes/regulations, including program procedures, methods and practices and their application to specific situations, usually acquired on the job or in lower level positions in the same or similar career path.

Engineering Design and Analysis
Identifies, develops, and analyzes engineering designs and/or specifications; plans and modifies methods. Identifies and plans for resources. Approves engineering designs and/or program/project specifications of other engineers/design professionals to meet desired compliance with engineering principles, standards, statutes, codes, regulations and design.  Monitor and ensure program/project meets specification and design. Negotiates design changes.

V. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree (B.S) from a four-year university or equivalent experience is required.    
Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate preferred with goal of obtaining a P.E. license.
            To be an Engineer in training requires passing of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Any previous consulting engineering or construction field experience is preferred.
Preferred similar co-op experience.

Computer Skills
Basic computing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Access.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit is desired.
