About Us:
St. Joseph Home creates a home for adults and children with developmental disabilities who have complex support needs and use a wheelchair for mobility. The Home, a non-profit ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, offers a creative, loving environment for those in the residential, respite programs, and day programs. Attention to the individual’s medical, social, educational and spiritual development reveals the unique giftedness of each person. General Statement of Duties:
The Community Home DSP works under direction of the Community Home Manager and is responsible for providing a supportive, home-like environment for individuals we serve in accordance with the mission and values of St. Joseph Home. Will provide experiences that allow the individuals we serve to develop to their fullest potential in areas of self-direction, independent living, self-care, self-sufficiency, language learning and mobility. 

Distinguishing Factors:
The Community Home DSP position supports a home-like environment where individuals actively participate in decisions regarding their lifestyle and daily activities. This DSP will be trained in delegated nursing and have responsibility to prepare nutritious meals for the residents.  

Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Interacts with, provides care for, and remains alert to and interested in the changing needs of individuals with disabilities.
  • Participates in implementation of MyPlan for each individual who lives in the home and follows established documentation procedures.
  • Acts as a model of gentle teaching and non-violence, monitoring the safety and health needs of the individuals we serve, ensuring their rights and welfare are guaranteed.
  • Responsible to identify, properly report, and document unusual incidents and major unusual incidents. Reports pertinent information, including medical information, regarding individuals to the Community Home Manager and
  • on-coming staff.
  • Attends to and assures that individuals’ personal hygiene needs and all activities of daily living (ADLs) are met according to specific guidelines as defined within the MyPlan.
  • Assists individuals with mobility throughout their environment by providing assistance maneuvering their wheelchair, and proper supervision and precautions for those with increased self mobility and power chairs.
  • Assists individuals in preparing, cooking and eating meals as defined by the MyPlan.
  • Maintains and dispenses required medications and treatments, internal and external, with utmost care and accuracy as described by physician’s orders and in accordance with federal and state regulations. Documents medication administration.
  • Ensures community home is clean and orderly with regard to premises, equipment and furnishings; notifies the Community Home Assistant Manager of equipment and home needs. 
  • Transports and accompanies individuals to medical/social service appointments and on community integration activities. Operates vehicles in a safe manner as required by applicable laws and procedures; maintains vehicles and notifies the Community Home Manager of vehicle service needs and expenses.
  • Acts as a fiduciary, safeguarding individuals’ property and assets by maintaining receipts, accurately documenting expenses and purchases, personal inventories, and ensures that individuals stay within their budget.  
  • Demonstrates competence in safe lifting, positioning, physical assistance to and transferring of individuals, including appropriate responsiveness to emergency and evacuation procedures; able to guide others to respond appropriately for scheduled drills and actual emergency situations.
  • Participate and attend various meetings and training as required.
  • Exercises discretion and respects individuals’ rights to privacy; maintaining confidentiality of information as required by HIPPA and policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities:
No formal supervisor responsibility. Assists Community Home Manager in educating, orientating, and the development of Community Home DSPs in order to develop a positive rapport with the goal of increasing staff retention and participation.

Job Specifications:
Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age. High school graduate or GED required. Successfully complete and pass knowledge assessment and skills demonstration. Good organization, communication and computer skills, with an understanding of scheduling procedures required. Delegated Nursing certification required within 6 weeks. CPR and First Aid training required. Current driver’s license with fewer than 6 points, vehicle liability insurance and willingness to drive company vehicles required. Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team while developing and maintaining professional relationships in the workplace. Applicant must be self directed and motivated. Must have ability to remain calm and use good judgment.
