Respite Direct Support Professional (DSP)   
Hours: FT 2nd 2:30p - 10:30p, EOW (37.5 hours per week)

General Statement of Duties:

The Respite DSP works under direction of the Respite Manager, in collaboration with Respite Nurses, to provide personal care and habilitation to Respite guests with developmental delay, ensuring accuracy of documentation and maintenance of records.

Distinguishing Factors:

The Respite DSP position is distinguished from other DSP positions due to the permanent assignment to Respite, where all hours worked will be scheduled. Must be knowledgeable of policies and procedures which enhance the lives of Respite guests. Facilitate arrival and departure of Respite guests, utilizing specific inventorying and sanitization procedures.

Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Interacts with Respite guests and must be alert to and interested in the needs of severe/profound multi-handicapped children and adults.
  • Assists Respite Manager and Respite Nurses in monitoring and staying alert to the changing needs and condition of guests at all times. Responsible to identify, properly report, and document unusual incidents. Reports pertinent information, including medical information, regarding guests to appropriate person(s) and on-coming staff.
  • Must be attentive to and assure that guests’ personal hygiene needs and all activities of daily living (ADLs) are met according to specific guidelines as defined within individual information sheets according to family directions; participates and or leads scheduled activities, including swimming.
  • Assists guests with mobility throughout their environment by providing assistance maneuvering their wheelchair, and proper supervision and precautions for those with increased self mobility and power chairs.
  • Demonstrates competence in safe lifting, positioning, physical assistance to and transferring of guests, including appropriate responsiveness to emergency and evacuation procedures; able to guide others to respond appropriately for scheduled drills and actual emergency situations.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team while developing and maintaining positive working relationships with co-workers.
  • Asists Respite Manager in the development and implementation of on-going in-service programs for staff. Participate and attend various meetings and trainings as required.
  • Exercises discretion and respects guests’ rights to privacy; maintaining confidentiality of information as required by HIPPA and policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities:

No formal supervisor responsibility. Assists Respite Manager and Nurses in educating, orientating, and the development of Respite DSPs in order to develop a positive rapport with the goal of increasing staff retention and participation.

Job Specifications:
Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age. High school graduate or GED required. Successfully complete and pass knowledge assessment and skills demonstration. General computer knowledge is required. CPR and First Aid training required. In order to assist with high volume admissions and discharges, attendance on Mondays, Fridays and weekends is required. Flexibility of schedule is required in order to meet operational needs. Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team while developing and maintaining professional relationships in the workplace.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and must be able to read and write with good comprehension.  The employee is consistently required to bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, stand, walk, carry, and grasp. The employee is frequently required to kneel and is occasionally required to sit or climb. The employee is rarely required to drive. Employee must be able to continuously lift 50 lbs. independently or with another staff up to 120 lbs. General physical agility required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This job is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; may occasionally handle emergency or crisis situations; is subject to many interruptions. The employee may be exposed to virus, disease and infection from guests.
