Under the direction of the Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for direct supervision of  Staff Accountants and Accounting Specialists within the Accounting department of the Credit Union.  This role includes managing and monitoring the daily activities of these individuals, support and training of specific daily functions, and ensuring that daily activities are completed accurately and timely in accordance with institution policies and procedures.

Major Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensures that all critical daily and monthly accounting functions are completed accurately and timely. 
  • Supervises the work of department staff including monitoring daily activities, directing job assignments, monitoring staff performance, coaching, counseling and training.  ensuring adequate backup for critical daily activities, and establishing standards and routines and monitoring daily operations. 
  • Directs and manages the accurate and timely closing of the credit union’s books at month and year end.
  • Completes and assists subordinates in the preparation of timely reconciliations and resolution of reconciling items for all General Ledger accounts on a monthly basis.  
  • Ensures that adequate backup and cross training is in place for critical daily functions within the accounting department, and that well documented procedures are in place. Assists in the development and implementation of new procedures to enhance the workflow of the department and efficiency while maintaining adequate operational and financial controls.
  • Responsible for managing a centralized Account Payable function for vendor invoice and employee expense reimbursements including verification and accuracy of data entry and proper general ledger account coding.
  • Ensures that fixed asset records and depreciation schedules, prepaids and accruals are accurately maintained for the credit union in a manner consistent with policies and guidelines.
  • Complete other duties and special projects as assigned. 
  • Must comply with all company policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.


Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent directly related experience required.  Five years or more of financial institution accounting experience with 2 or more years of supervisory experience; Candidate must have demonstrated experience working with accounting systems such as general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets and financial reporting combined with supervisory experience.  Prior experience with Symitar – Epysis, Prologue General Ledger, Fixed Assets and Accounts Payable Suite,  FICS Mortgage Servicer, Shared Branching and back room (ACH, ATM) strongly desired.


Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance or directly related equivalent experience required.  CPA desired.

Interpersonal Skills

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Other Skills

Knowledge of activities of financial institutions and the required accounting treatment and reconciliation procedures of those activities. Proficiency in computer applications and spreadsheets; ability to learn new programs. Must have the ability to work in a professional manner. Must be able to work quickly and accurately.

Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.
