Reporting to the Chief Science Officer, the Technical Applications Group Manager (Portugal) is responsible for leading site-level process development and continuous improvement projects to support new product launches and existing manufacturing operations at the new manufacturing site in Cantanhede, Portugal. The candidate will work closely with Operations, Quality, and Product Development teams on cannabinoid extraction, refinement, and isolation methods; on new product development and launch initiatives; and continuous improvement to ensure achievement of KPI targets on COGS, efficiency, and product launch success.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Perform as the site lead for development and implementation of new manufacturing processes, with a focus on botanical extraction and isolation of cannabinoid based actives
  • Work with closely with site Operations and Quality to develop and optimize various extraction and refinement manufacturing processes
  • Lead site-level scale-up of new manufacturing processes from development to production quantities, in collaboration with plant production personnel
  • Lead the design and development of new equipment technologies, including liaising with external vendors and/or consultants for new equipment projects
  • Assist the Product Development team where appropriate for development of novel cannabis-based products and formulations
  • Work with the Quality Control department to perform necessary analytical testing of API, intermediates, raw materials and excipients as required for preparation and filing of regulatory documents
  • Review and establish specifications for novel products and processes
  • Provide Director of Operations and Chief Science Officer with investigational or summary reports on an as needed basis
  • Perform routine calibration and maintenance of equipment and daily quality control testing of analytical and/or preparative methods
  • to develop novel chemical transformations, purification processes and formulations for cannabinoid-based products

Qualifications and education requirements

  • Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical science, biochemistry, or similar technical field. PhD degree would be an asset.
  • 5+ years in a relevant technical development, R&D, or related engineering or development role. Experience in pharmaceutical setting would be an asset.
  • Proven experience and track record of success in large scale pharmaceutical, health product, food, or cosmetics manufacturing environment
  • Experience with scale up of novel chemical methods from lab to pilot scale
  • Strong working knowledge of GMP practices, standard operating procedures, and master batch records
  • Must have the proven ability to organize and prioritize work for efficient operations
  • Must be able to work cross-functionally
  • Substantial attention to detail is required
