Position Summary
 
Communication Specialist is the front line in providing safe and effective air medical transport.  The Communication Specialist will work in a fast-paced environment as an individual and as in a team environment in coordinating patient transport requests.  The Communication Specialist works closely with pilots, medical staff, aircraft mechanics, and administration to ensure transports are completed in a professional and efficient manner.
 
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • EMS, air medical communication, and/or 911 communication center experience preferred or previous customer service experience
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Aviation and medical terminology knowledge preferred
  • Must be computer literate and be able to learn utilization of software programs including typing 35 wpm
  • Ability to quickly manage and transition between various tasks with rapidly changing priorities while maintaining attention to detail
  • Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to deal in high stress situations
  • Certification: Certified Flight Communicator (CFC) through International Association of Medical Transport Communication Specialists (IAMTCS) and Public Safety Telecommunicator I through Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO)
 
Additional Experience/Skills/Knowledge/Training Requirements:
  • Licensure: EMT, EMD, POST certification or equivalent education or experience preferred.
  • General geographic knowledge and map reading skills.
  • Preferred 2 years of experience in health care environment.
  • Two year degree in related field preferred.
Typical Duties: 
  • Receives all incoming telephone and radio requests for service and information
  • Activates all Life Link III assets for assistance to requests for response
  • Maintains communication and tracking of Life Link III assets
  • Maintains communication with requesting facilities/agencies.
  • Coordinates pre-planned medical transport requests with requesting facilities and necessary support agencies
  • Maintains accurate electronic record of aircraft maintenance and flight personnel Participates in committees, public relations functions, and educational opportunities
  • Responsible for presenting a professional and courteous demeanor on the telephone and radio
  • Initiates and coordinates Post Accident Incident Plans and emergency plans as needed
  • Participates in committees, public relations functions, staff meetings, performance improvement processes and education opportunities

Customers Served/Working Relationships: 
  • Communication Specialists work with a variety of local and state emergency dispatch centers and hospitals in the region to facilitate transport requests.  The Communication Specialist maintains a professional relationship with requesting parties, transport teams, and receiving parties to help facilitate patient transport.
  • Communication Specialists provide a ‘One Call’ service to our customers to assist them with all transport request needs including assistance with air and/or ground transportation.
 
Major Challenges
  • Life Link III Communication Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and all holidays with the potential for rotating or multiple shifts and non-traditional hours.  Work is primarily an indoor office environment.  Communication Specialist activity is based on customer needs and can experience periods of non-transport activity.

  • The Communication Specialist is expected to protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with the Company’s privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider.
  • The Communication Specialist may access protected health information and other patient information only to the extent that is necessary to complete job duties.  Information may only be shared with those who have a need to know specific patient information you have in your possession to complete their job responsibilities related to treatment or other company operations.
  • The Communication Specialist is expected to actively participate in Company privacy training and is required to communicate privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients and others in accordance with Company policy.
