Senior Herpetology Keeper
 
The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is seeking a dynamic, driven, and enthusiastic team member to join its Herpetology Department as a Senior Herpetology Keeper. The zoo prides itself in its diverse reptile and amphibian collection and involvement in several in situ and ex situ conservation projects. Expansion of its reptile and amphibian collection, conservation projects and research activities is ongoing.
 
Under the direction of the herpetology supervisor, the herpetology keeper will be responsible for ensuring the welfare of reptiles, amphibians and fishes under their care, maintaining excellent condition of their assigned buildings, exhibits and workspaces, and participating in all departmental projects and activities. Candidates must be passionate about herpetology and possess extensive prior husbandry experience and familiarity with the natural history and biology of reptiles and amphibians.
 
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences (biology, zoology, ecology, conservation, etc.). Minimum of 3 years working with reptiles and amphibians, including large constrictors, crocodilians, and venomous species (including elapids, viperids and helodermatids) in a zoological park or related facility.
 
Desired Skills and Competencies
  • A clear understanding of the role that herpetology departments have to play in zoo biology
  • Demonstrated success in the care and breeding of reptiles and amphibians
  • Demonstrated ability to take on and lead independent and collaborative projects (i.e., breeding, conservation, research, educational, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated writing abilities a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with a diverse team of colleagues with different backgrounds
  • Excellent record keeping skills and attention to detail
  • Prior experience with maintaining life support systems and water quality
  • Prior experience assisting with field or laboratory research a plus
  • Additional technical skills such as carpentry, plumbing, plant propagation, and exhibit fabrication a plus
Physical Demands
Candidates must have the ability to stand for long periods of time, be able to bend and kneel, be able to lift 50 pounds without difficulty, be able to traverse zoo grounds, and operate a motorized cart.  In addition, candidates must be comfortable working outdoors.
