Under the direction of the Aquatic Director, and in accordance with the Christian nature and purpose of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, the Aquatic Safety Assistant is responsible for greeting members and effective operation of the courtesy desk, slide assistant, light housekeeping, and provide some assistance to the Swim Lesson instructor.  The Water Safety Assistant will work closely with Lifeguards, Pool Deck Supervisors and Swim Instructors, but will not guard pools or teach swim lessons.

The incumbent must have the competencies, skills and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the Association’s mission, goals and vision for serving the community.  Other important competencies of the Aquatic Safety Assistant include the following:
  • Assist lifeguard with maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas.
  • Provide swim test evaluations of members and visitors and utilize proper tracking systems in place to ensure that proper record keeping is done for next visit.
  • Prevent accidents by maintaining constant observation of assigned areas, enforcing health and safety rules and maintaining emergency readiness.
  • Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Maintain effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Convey basic information on YMCA programs and schedules to members and, as appropriate, refers members to other YMCA programs and or staff. 
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follow all rules and regulations regarding safety.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the pool and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness.
  • Encourage character building through own actions and actions of others.
  • Check pool and rescue equipment and promptly report any problems.
  • Set up and stores equipment for recreational swims and assists instructors with set up.
  • Serve as assistant swim instructor to help manage lesson time to ensure all goals of lessons are being met.
  • Assist with check-in at Welcome Center(s), slide monitoring & water features.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum 15 years of age.
  • Thorough knowledge of the safety rules and regulations, rescue skills, policies and procedures for use of the pool.
  • Must have knowledge of the pool schedule, pool activities and membership policies.
  • Current YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant Certification (YASA).
  • Current Basic Life Support or professional CPR/AED certification (to be renewed annually).
  • Current Basic First Aid certification.
  • Current Emergency Oxygen certification.
  • YMCA Child Abuse Prevention & Sexual Harassment training must be completed within first 60 days of employment.
