TUnder the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor or Aquatics Director, and in accordance with the Christian nature and purpose of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, the Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well being of all facility members and program members in pool, whirlpool, sauna, and locker room areas. Currently looking for a guard that can work Monday through Friday, 4:45 am - 12 pm.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Y policies and procedures. Complete related reports as required.
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the Y and/or the state Health Department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving for duty.
- Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and take appropriate action.
- Attends all lifeguard in-service meetings (a minimum of 1 x month during the school year and bi-monthly from Memorial Day to Labor Day) and /or staff meetings.
- Keeps full attention on the pool and its occupants at all times while sitting in the guard chair or walking around the pool perimeter.
- Maintains appropriate certifications, including Lifeguard, CPR Pro, Basic First Aid, Emergency Oxygen Administration requirements. Work with Aquatic Director sixty (60) days before certifications are set to expire to ensure requirements are kept up-to-date.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Must be at least 18 years old, and able to work the available shift (M-F, 4:45am-12pm).
- Current YMCA Lifeguarding or American Red Cross Lifeguarding and obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 60 days of hire.
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
- Complete all association required trainings within deadlines set by Human Resources.
- Ability to maintain certification – level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Ability to pass lifeguard written and water tests.
- Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Candidates must understand that significant background noise exists in all indoor and outdoor aquatic environments. In addition, lifeguard candidates should have a minimum hearing threshold of no more than an average of a 25-decibel loss in both ears over a range of frequencies (500Hz, 1000Hz, 2000Hz, 788 and 3000Hz). Candidates who use hearing aids or other corrective devices for hearing should be able to perform all rescue skills and emergency procedures without interruptions to adjust, retrieve, or install or attach a hearing aid or corrective device.
- Observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
- Candidates who use corrective eyewear should be able to perform all rescue skills and emergency procedures without interruptions to adjust, clear, or retrieve correct eyewear.
- Ability to meet strength and lifting requirements necessary for a water rescue.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
