Position Summary

 
This position has overall responsibility for all food safety/security and quality assurance programs and initiatives in all MBG Value Added production areas. This position will act as the FSQA Manager at the IQF & VAF facility in Alma, GA and will coordinate FSQA activities with IQF facility in Bloomingdale, MI. This includes all manufactured products and coordination of efforts between management, producers, packers, Naturipe Foods, Naturipe Farms, customers, government and industry organizations.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

 
  1. Research, maintain and implement industry and government best practice information regarding food safety, security and quality requirements focused on continual improvement. 
  2. Provide food safety, food defense/security, and quality assurance direction to MBG approved VAF and processing facilities.
  3. Align and coordinate MBG’s food safety/security programs with the requirements and needs of Naturipe Farms and Naturipe Foods.
  4. Acts as designated training manager. Responsible for determining and facilitating training for all MBG approved VAF and process facilities employees and managers for sanitation, personal hygiene, etc. Develop and coordinate all MBG food safety/ security communications with producers, packers, Naturipe Farms, Naturipe Foods.
  5. Trains approved MBG processors in all FSMA, food safety/security, HAACP and quality assurance requirements and update this training as needed.
  6. Research and keep current all customer and microbiological specifications for value added fresh and process products.
  7. Monitor and assist in managing all customer quality claims related to process products and developing effective corrective actions.
  8. Investigate and maintain current and new information regarding packing equipment, technologies and procedures, and communicate this information to MBG producers (VAF & process products).
  9. Manage the QA department at the Alma & Bloomingdale facilities, review weekly documentation and ensure plant adherence to the food safety practices and procedures.
  10. Develop and monitor all applicable MBG food safety and quality control budgets for VAF & process facilities.
  11. Is designated as SQF Practitioner with PCQI certification.
  12. Take lead role in 3rd party audits and preparation for all MBG approved VAF & process facilities.
  13. Ensure proper grading and quality for finished product at all MBG approved VAF & process facilities.
  14. Maintains accurate and easy retrievable food safety, security and quality records.
  15. Performs self-audits of food safety program for elements of effectiveness, identifies issues and develops corrective actions within the program for MBG-owned VAF and process facilities.
 

Quantitative Data/Job Dimension

 
  1. 10 -20 customer/third-party audits per year
  2. Facility processes 15-20 million pounds of product per year
  3. 75,000 square foot facility in Alma
  4. Overall facility budget is $4 million
 
 

Qualifications and Skills Required

 
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Food Safety, science or related field preferred.
  2. At least five years’ experience in production agriculture, fruit production, food safety or quality assurance fields preferred.
  3. Outstanding verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  4. Certified as a PCQI and the Grower Produce Safety Rule under FSMA.If no certification, candidate must obtain within six months of hire.
  5. Outstanding prioritization, time management and analytical skills are essential.
  6. A proven ability to work with a variety of people and handle stressful situations calmly is essential.
  7. Strong self-starting history and multi-tasking skills are required.
  8. Ability to function as a team player and work in a professional, confidential manner.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications required.
  10. Maintain 100% producer compliance with MBG food safety requirements and policies.
  11. Maintain MBG targeted achievement levels for food safety performance.
  12. Possess a valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.
  13. SQF Practitioner
Work Environment 
  1. Provide reliable transportation that will be compensated.
  2. 20% travel time plus spend approximately 2 full weeks in Michigan during peak time
  3. Be of sound physical condition to meet the auditing demands of walking, climbing, seeing, kneeling, and lifting (to 50 pounds)
  4. Be able to withstand extreme climate conditions of heat and cold.
  5. Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with members, customers, government, media, and the general public within the confines of law.
Employment Specifications
  1. Permanent, full-time employment position
  2. Typical work week is 50+ hours
  3. Must be available by email, text, or phone 24/7 except when on approved leave.
In the Event of Absence
The Director of Food Safety is responsible for maintaining a trained individual to act as the Food Safety representative for short term and minor responsibilities. The designee will be a part of the Food Safety/QC team. In the event of a long-term absence or a major food safety issue, the corporate Food Safety Management will act as support for the facility.
 
Location:  Alma, GA with travel during season to Grand Junction, MI
Hours:  Full-time exempt permanent.
