Applications Engineer - Electrochemical Energy Storage
Position Overview
Responsible for all engineering activities (specification, design, Verification & Validation (V&V), and release) related to the performance (energy, power, and aging) of the energy storage.
Primary responsibilities
  • Proactively liaise between the battery pack development, cell R&D, and manufacturing functions
  • Create and author the requirements specification for the battery energy storage (pack and cell) Requirements Elicitation per ASPICE methodology to derive OEM requirements into cell level SOR
  • Conduct trade-off studies with cell and BMS development with regard to the project constraints
  • Ensure consistency between requirements, implementation, and V&V methods throughout the project
  • Work closely with program managers to ensure the milestones are reached on time
  • Develop requirements and action plans for future battery/pack/Battery Management System (BMS)/cell improvements
  • Conduct Root-Cause Analysis (RCA) for pack and cell validation failures and develop preventative and corrective action plans, and assist with the implementation
  • Contribute to the development of detailed validation plans for all phases of a program; good understanding of automotive xVP&R
  • Provide engineering support to cell manufacturing team to resolve build issues and assist with process optimization and QA/QC
  • Contribute to the development of new simulation models, resp. improvement of existing ones
  • Contribute to the creation of product FMEA
  • Up to 15% travel may be required, including some international travel
Required Skills
  • Basic experience, understanding, and intuition of physicochemical phenomena of Li-ion cells and electrochemical test methods, e.g., CV, EIS, HPPC, OCV, DCIR, ACR, calendar/cycle life, and reliability/abuse.
  • Experience with electrochemistry, electrodeposition, statistical data analysis & problem-solving, materials characterization, and measurement.
  • Working experience with automotive xEV applications, related to cells, modules, and systems.
  • Working experience with environmental, mechanical, and electrical designs in an automotive environment in compliance with automotive industry standards.
  • Interface directly with the customer for cell development, testing, and problem resolution topics
  • Act as a liaison between the product design team and the cell design team
  • Able to conduct cell level destructive analysis tear down for root cause analysis work.
  • Ability to model battery in Matlab / Simulink
  • Ability to develop algorithms for cell and pack level SOC and SOH
  • Experienced in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of test failures or product related issues.
  • Good written and oral communication skills and ability to present technical data and complex/abstract concepts to both technical and non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated ability and high performance in a fast-paced cross-functional environment.
  • Languages (business fluent or native): English, German

  • Prior experience in design and characterization of Li-based coin or pouch cells, and implementing Designs of Experiments (DOEs) for new cells.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Solid-State Physics, or related fields and 4+ years of automotive battery application experience OR Master’s degree in a related field and 2+ years of automotive battery experience (experience in other battery applications may also be considered).
