Position Overview
A123 Systems, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented team player to be an important member of R&D efforts to develop a structure-formulation-property relationships involving solid electrolyte technologies at A123 Systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of achievement in the areas of electrochemical modeling, solid state electrochemistry, materials chemistry, or interfacial surface science. An awareness of and desire to contribute to the development of anode, cathode and electrolyte technologies for solid state battery applications are critical. The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills coupled with the initiative and patience to see large projects to completion.
Primary responsibilities
  • Use commercial software or custom code to build porous electrode models
  • Measure fundamental electrochemical properties of solid electrolyte materials and electrodes.
  • Plan experiments and data generation for model development, calibration and validation
  • Interact closely with R&D and engineering colleagues
  • Communicate results internally and externally through timely, high-quality research reports,
  • Generate innovative ideas, suggest new formulations, and establish technical plans
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments affecting areas of responsibility
  • Display sense of entrepreneurship and drive results to product implementation
  • Maximize solid state battery performance within the constraints of our manufacturing processes
  • Work with external collaborators to design, direct, and carry out experiments to achieve project milestones
  • Build small-scale prototype cells to measure key metrics and demonstrate technology developments
  • Document results, prepare reports, and present findings to leadership
Specific Skills required for the job
  • Ph.D. with significant experience involving applied electrochemistry.
  • Lithium ion battery experience required.
  • Research experience with solid electrolytes
  • Detailed experience in optimizing one or more components within a solid state battery
  • Experience with DOE (Design of Experiment) methodology and software
  • Strong background in electrochemical and battery technology
  • Extensive experience in modeling electrochemical systems
  • Working knowledge of COMSOL software
  • Understanding of battery-related experiments including cell construction, cycler operation, impedance spectroscopy, etc.
  • Ability to clearly and confidently communicate through oral and written modes
  • Familiarity and proficiency with advanced analytical techniques
  • Comfortable with a “hands-on” approach to getting things done
  • Ability and willingness to keep meticulous written and electronic record of experimental activity
  • Ability to think creatively and analytically to solve technical issues
