A123 Systems LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wanxiang America Corporation, powers innovation using its Nanophosphate® and Nickel Manganese Cobalt  lithium ion battery technologies in a variety of different industries.  The Waltham and Hopkinton, MA division of A123 Systems is an R&D environment centered around developing the battery market’s next lithium ion cells through designing, building mass prototypes and testing of cells.
Position Overview
The Test Engineer will be a critical part of the R&D Team supporting the innovative battery technology development.  Specifically, the Test Engineer will be responsible for working with lithium ion cell validation engineers to execute OEM test requirements.  The Test Engineer is tasked with scripting cell charge & discharge profiles to be used by the test engineering and technician team on the battery cycling equipment.    In addition to scripting and administering large cell testing validation programs, the Test Engineer will work to design and automate new test equipment setups such-as abuse nail penetration equipment and an impedance measurement station.  Projects like these will require the individual to have knowledge of LabView and basic system controls.  The position will be located at the Hopkinton, MA Cell Validation center with occasional travel to the R&D center in Waltham, MA.
Primary responsibilities
  • 25% Scripting Li-ion cell charge and discharge profiles for battery cyclers per OEM specification. Monitoring and reviewing lithium ion cell data produced by the various scripts to ensure data integrity and end of life criteria.  
  • 50% Hands on standing with Technicians on the lab floor loading 25 pound cells on tests and starting tests via battery cycler software.  On the floor troubleshooting battery cycler electrical component failures.  
  • 25% Engineering Improvements. 
    • Design, procure, setup, automate new equipment test setups
    • Develop and document work instructions for process procedures and equipment maintenance
  • Support implementation of environmental and safety best practices.
Specific Skills/Abilities
The position requires strong interpersonal skills and inner drive. The successful candidate will be a hands on problem solver and work primarily in an engineering office and with other technicians in the test lab environment.     
  • Ability to mentor engineering technicians and lead projects
  • Creation of MS Excel VBA tools to aid in data analysis
  • Use of LabView for automation of test data gathering equipment (ie Scale, Hypot Tester, Multi-meter, Test Chamber)
  • Hands on electrical equipment troubleshooting and component level replacement. 
  • Bachelors of Science in an Engineering discipline
  • Five or more years of technical lab experience in an electro-mechanical environment.  Preferably experience in testing of batteries.
