Position: Senior Solid State Battery Scientist

Position Overview
A123 Systems, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented team player to be an important member of R&D efforts to innovate, develop and integrate leading emergent solid state battery technologies at A123 Systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of achievement in the areas of solid state electrochemistry, Li-ion batteries, materials chemistry, or interfacial surface science. An awareness of and desire to contribute to the development of anode, cathode and electrolyte technologies for solid state battery applications are critical. The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills coupled with the initiative and patience to see large projects to completion.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead a small team of researchers at A123’s UK R&D arm, within the constraints of the Global Technology Team
  • Work closely with Global Technology leaders to execute program objectives
  • Conduct meetings and oversee experimentation holding team accountable to deliverables
  • Regularly aggregate and report up experimental results, quarterly reports and other documentation
  • Communicate discovery and intellectual property findings to R&D Leadership with punctuality
  • Maximize solid state battery performance within the constraints of our manufacturing processes
  • Work with external collaborators to design, direct, and carry out experiments to achieve project milestones
  • Build small-scale prototype cells to measure key metrics and demonstrate technology developments
  • Document results, prepare reports, and present findings to leadership

Specific Skills and Background
  • Ph.D. with 5+ years industrial experience in an energy storage facing industry. (LIB experience preferred)
  • Several years of proven experience as a team leader and technology innovator (IP generation) is critical
  • Research experience with solid electrolytes is highly desired
  • Detailed experience in optimizing one or more components within a solid state battery is helpful
  • Experience with DOE (Design of Experiment) methodology and software is preferred
  • Extensive experience in modeling electrochemical systems
  • Working knowledge of COMSOL software a major plus
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion battery manufacture, characterization, and failure analysis is highly desired
  • Ability to clearly and confidently communicate through oral and written modes
  • Familiarity and proficiency with advanced analytical techniques
  • Comfortable with a “hands-on” approach to getting things done and a high degree of ambiguity tolerance.
  • Strong, proven, written communication skills and experience in technical writing a must-have
  • Ability to think creatively and analytically to solve technical issues
