A123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets.
 
Position Overview
A123 Systems has an immediate opening position for an Associate Research Engineer to join the team that specializes in solid state battery simulation and optimization.  The successful candidate will be focused on characterizing of solid state electrodes and electrolyte materials to support A123’s efforts to achieve impedance reduction, long cycle/calendar life, and high safety performance for high energy density, solid state lithium-ion and beyond lithium-ion batteries.  Primary job responsibilities include fundamental material characterization for model parameterization and cell component optimization. Secondary responsibilities will include maintenance of laboratory equipment such as inert atmosphere glovebox, high precision potentiostat, and lab-scale electrode and cell fabrication equipment. Attending to these responsibilities will require working closely with modeling scientists in A123’s UK facility as well as scientists and engineers located in A123’s Waltham, MA facility. Additional responsibilities include data collection, test procedure modification, data analysis and presentation, updating SOPs, and maintaining shared laboratory space.
 
Primary responsibilities
  • Assembling and testing of electrochemical test vehicles to evaluate battery materials.
  • Processing, recording and tracking test data using certain software tools
  • Preparing powders and thin-film coatings for analysis
  • Troubleshooting and optimization of existing processes and devices.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient use of laboratory space and appropriate use of laboratory equipment
  • Manage purchasing of general laboratory consumables, ensuring adequate quantities are maintained at all times
  • Promote good housekeeping habits along with overseeing and maintaining a neat, organized and safe environment for all
  • Coordinate setup, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance for all laboratory equipment as necessary with appropriate facilities and R&D/Cell Development personnel
  • Confirm safe storage and proper labeling of chemicals, consumables, and other items present in the designated laboratory on a frequent basis
  • Assist in establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for activities occurring within the designated laboratory
 
Specific Skills/Abilities
  • Strong work ethic, a sense of accountability, and the ability to take ownership of laboratory functions.
  • Hands-on experience on lithium-ion cell assembly/testing is a plus
  • Can effectively work with others in a fast paced, collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and other PC based software.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interact with technicians, laboratory managers, and scientists.
  • Drives for results - The passion to set and meet high standards of performance.
  • Drives for accountability - The ability to establish clear, measurable goals and deliver on commitments.
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to perform various math calculations and use test / measuring devices.
  • Experience working with glove boxes and dry room is preferred.
  • Experience with batteries or electrochemical systems a strong plus
  • Familiarity with Statistical Process Control , and Design of Experiments a plus
  • Fluent in English.
