Position:              Advanced Quality Engineer
Reports To:         Senior Manager, Product Quality Engineering
Location:             Stuttgart
 
A123 Systems, GmbH is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets.
 
Position Overview:
This is a customer-focused, hands-on position responsible to ensure that new product launches achieve all APQP quality-related deliverables.  Working directly with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, and Customers, responsibilities include tracking and evaluating status of new product launch deliverables, participating in DFMEA and PFMEA development, product sample builds, coordinating problem resolution, and communicating results to customers.
 
Primary responsibilities
  • APQP Product Development Activities
    • Elicit, review and analyze customer quality requirements for feasibility
    • Prototype build support and issue resolution
    • Facilitate corrective action, read-across and lessons learned for DV/PV failures
    • Prototype inspection plans (IQC), control plans, and audit sheets
    • Participate in PFMEA development and deployment
    • Coordinate process capability studies on key characteristics and summarize results
    • Communicate status and plans to customers, input to customer portals
  • Product Launch Activities
    • Develop prototype and pre-production control plans
    • Lead risk analysis for changes
    • Coordinate MSA studies
    • Develop, monitor, and manage safe launch audits
    • Assist in PPAP development
    • Communicate/handoff of key information to teams at international manufacturing sites
  • Problem Resolution
    • Production problem resolution during safe launch period
    • Determine and initiate containment activities
    • Facilitate problem solving teams
    • Communicate status and plans to customers, input to customer portals
    • Facilitate read-across and lessons learned from corrective action
    • Verify process/product documentation is updated based on corrective actions taken
 
Specific Skills/Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – English language skills required
  • Ability to interface well with internal and external customers
  • Clearly communicate technical information in presentation format
  • Compiling information from customer web portals, internal databases, usage of Microsoft Office applications and Minitab for data analysis.
  • Problem solving using standard quality tools (5-Why, SPC, capability analyses, DOE) and ability to train others
  • Documentation management skills, including experience compiling automotive PPAP documents
  • Metrics development and reporting
  • Independent, detail-oriented self-starter with business acumen.
  • Hands-on approach with a “can-do” attitude.
 
Education/Experience
  • BSE or commensurate quality experience.
  • 5-10 years of automotive Tier 1 quality experience.
  • Experience in data collection, quality reporting, and corrective action.
  • In-depth knowledge of automotive industry quality expectations, policies and requirements.
  • Experience with IQFMEA software and Agile Database applications a plus!
  • Preferred to have significant operations experience in an automotive manufacturing environment; applying quality methods and lean manufacturing techniques to yield improvements in quality, delivery and cost.
  • Have, or willingness to work toward, certification as VDA 6.3 process auditor.and/or ASQ Certified Quality Engineer.
  • Desired experience with automotive electronics containing embedded software.
  • Desired experience in dealing with automotive electronics assembly processes and failure modes.
