Position Overview
The Engineering Manager will be responsible for all equipment and production processes employed by the R&D Pilot Battery Cell Assembly Line in our Waltham R&D Facility. They will lead a team of engineers and technicians tasked with optimizing equipment and production processes, aimed at maximizing output while maintaining high levels of safety and quality. Responsibilities include maintenance and continuous improvement of existing equipment, design and development of new equipment, process improvement, and development of assembly techniques for novel battery technology. They will also direct and perform various tasks to facilitate product development, creating fabrication and testing techniques as necessary to support the rapid development of multiple battery cell technologies and designs.
 
Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage team to support Cell Pilot Line Operations for the production of experimental battery cells
  • Implement and drive standard practices for production, safety, and quality control within the facility and among engineering and operations staff
  • Work closely with Product Design and Operations teams to optimize efficiency and effectiveness of the pilot line as part of the product development cycle
  • Participate in and support scale-up projects to bring products from prototype to production, travel as necessary to complete hand-off to production scale
  • Develop and refine manufacturing methods with flexibility to accommodate fast-paced design development
  • Research, commission, and validate new equipment to prototype new battery cell formats, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and vendors as necessary
  • Develop and implement data-driven continuous improvement plans for capability, cost, and efficiency of existing techniques and equipment
  • Effectively utilize root cause analysis tools to identify and solve production issues
 
Specific Skills/Abilities
  • Internally driven to solve complex problems and take on new challenges
  • Demonstrated familiarity and success with Kaizen, 5S, and lean manufacturing concepts
  • Strong analytical skills–interpret and make data driven decisions
  • Strong organizational and management skills – capable of leading technical projects
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing in the form of technical reports
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) is required
  • Able to create and interpret mechanical drawings
 
Education/Experience
  • B.S. in Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering plus 5-10 years of experience
  • Experience in manufacturing, operations, or quality control preferred
  • Experience with SPC, with demonstrated success in applicable projects
  • Expertise with Minitab, MATLAB, or similar statistical software package (Minitab preferred)
  • Familiarity with MES in a production environment
