POSITION TITLE: Manager, Communications & Media Relations
REPORTS TO: Senior Director, Communications
SUMMARY: This position will be AGA's frontline media contact, responsible for engaging with reporters and creating strategies to build relationships with the media and increase AGA media coverage. This position will also plan and implement member- and public-facing promotional campaigns for AGA content. The ideal candidate will have proven success in media relations, excellent oral and written communication, a drive for successful outcomes, and a positive "can-do" attitude.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
 
Media Relations
  1. Oversee AGA’s media strategy, identifying new opportunities to engage reporters on issues important to gastroenterology and health care overall.
  2. Serve as primary point of contact between AGA and media on proactive and responsive media requests. 
  3. Maintain and grow media contact database.
  4. Maintain speakers’ bureau of physician spokespersons.
  5. Proactively seek out interview opportunities in health trade, policy and popular press.
  6. On a monthly basis, conduct press outreach focusing on studies published in Gastroenterology (basic and clinical science), Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (clinical journal), and Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology (basic science).
  7. Promote AGA clinical guidelines to media.
  8. Work with institution press contacts to promote science in AGA journals.
  9. Plan media webinars and briefings.
  10. Draft AGA press releases, messages, position statements, fact sheets, etc. and review/edit those created by colleagues.
  11. Create AGA press materials for distribution at Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) annual meeting.
  12. Provide media relations support to other AGA meetings.
  13. Monitor and track media coverage, sharing noteworthy placements with the team.
  14. Promote noteworthy media coverage on social media and to members.
 
Communications
  1. Promote AGA programs, positions, publications, events and spokespersons to media and members.
  2. Draft press releases, media alerts, social media posts for public promotion, as well as newsletter articles, web copy and blast email for member promotion.
  3. Update website with new content using content management system.
  4. Assist others on the team with content development needs, blast emails, video projects, social campaigns and other work, as assigned. 
  5. Create and implement methods for tracking and evaluating success and impact of communications strategies for assigned projects.
  6. Provide proofreading support, reviewing documents before public dissemination for style, grammar, clarity and length.
     
Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of three years’ experience in the field.
  2. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  3. Solid media relations experience and demonstrated news coverage placements. Ability to understand, interpret and write about complex, scientific information.
  4. Command of AP Style and grammar rules and a strong attention to detail.
  5. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  6. Proficiency with Google Analytics and HTML.
  7. Experience with health/medical/science issues and public relations agency experience a plus.
