Fire Engine RED is an innovative technology, marketing, and modeling solutions company that has served the education market since 2001. We offer a powerful admissions CRM – with an intuitive, consumer-software-like user experience – for colleges and other schools that recruit students.


As the Chief Technology Officer, you have a proven record in managing technical growth. You will be responsible for leading the transformation of our software from a functional product architecture to a fully scalable implementation, capable of supporting a large client base.


You will also be responsible for developing a technical vision, goals, and strategies for our CRM product that are consistent with the company’s vision. In addition, you will ensure that the company’s development practices remain consistent with Agile framework and methodologies.  


This is a newly created, full-time, telecommute position reporting to the CEO & Chief Creative Officer.



  • Developing and maintaining a high level technical vision for Fireworks that anticipates feature additions, client growth, and usage volume.

  • Creating a strategic plan to scale the software and infrastructure for the CRM.

  • Managing and evaluating priorities from all areas of Innovation including: back-end developers, front-end/UX developers, QA, architects, builds/automation, and development operations.

  • Managing Software Architect, Site Reliability Architect, Director of User Experience, and Development Lead.

  • Serving as the single point of contact to inform the Product Owner of the highest priority Innovation needs from a global viewpoint.

  • Working with Scrum Master and Development Lead to oversee project completion through ongoing planning and progress tracking.

  • Serving as the single point of contact for the CEO and executive leadership team to communicate technical business strategies, tasks, and plans.

  • Influencing the culture of the Innovation team so that developers immediately address technical debt during development of new features and fixing bugs.

  • Creating and enforcing best practices for team structure, coding standards, testing integration, build processes and development planning.

  • Serving as an escalation point for development team.

  • Developing and refining processes that promote continuous improvements in productivity, quality and client satisfaction.

  • Managing resources across the Innovation team.

  • Managing partnerships with third-party infrastructure, service, and staffing providers.

  • Monitoring the latest software development technologies, tools, and trends.

  • Empowering managers to lead, motivate, and mentor their teams.

  • Recruiting, hiring, and retaining a strong talent foundation on the Innovation team.

  • Provides reports, summarizing achieved milestones and benchmarks, analysis of software module/feature usage, and development/maintenance costs.

  • On call and responsible for the continued uptime of the application.



  • Entrepreneurial mindset – analytical, creative, progressive

  • Experience with managing the growth of an IT team and its processes from a startup level to enterprise level

  • Strong portfolio with 10+ years in software and web development with proven experience managing large-scale, complex SaaS-based projects in an Agile/Scrum environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work remotely and manage an enterprise-level, remote development team of 30+

  • Must be an excellent communicator with ability to explain complex technical details to business.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.

  • Experience in multiple domains of software development: Front End, Back End, DevOps, QA, and/or Product

  • Full stack web development experience in PHP, MySQL (or similar RDBMS), and JavaScript

  • Strong knowledge of SOLID principles and a variety of OOP design patterns
