SENIOR ADVISOR FOR PROGRAMS

The Senior Advisor is a new role created by current MacArthur Foundation President, Bob Gallucci. As a member of the senior team and in close collaboration with the President, the primary focus of the Senior Advisor will be on the programmatic impact of the MacArthur Foundation. In particular, the Senior Advisor will analyze the programmatic strategies of the Foundation, their impact and successful execution. This leader will be a ‘thought partner’ to the President and other members of the senior team, working at times as an internal consultant on the programmatic aspects of the Foundation’s work.

The Senior Advisor is a senior executive with the credibility and expertise to serve as a ‘thought partner’ to the MacArthur Foundation President and senior team. S/he is a true intellect with strong analytic skills with the credibility to work effectively across programs and levels of staff. The successful candidate will have the ability to collaborate and proactively identify solutions and opportunities to support the Foundation’s mission and programmatic goals.
The Senior Advisor will report directly to the President, and serve as an advisor to the Foundation across all program areas, working with the President, Vice Presidents, Directors, Program Officers and administrators. S/he will have a proven ability to succeed in a multi-layered, intellectually charged work environment.
In terms of the performance and personal competencies required for the position, we would highlight the following:
Intellectual Breadth & Curiosity: Broad intellectual capacity, curiosity and passion for an eclectic range of issues and subjects across the broadest array of areas, including those not yet defined. We are seeking candidates with a demonstrated fundamental curiosity for learning, and the confidence to be bold, yet humble; a leader who will not be intimidated around others who are more accomplished in their individual fields.
Building Relationships and Using Influence: The successful candidate will be an energetic collaborator and a skilled relationship builder. This is an effective communicator and listener with strong interpersonal skills and the gravitas to develop positive and productive relationships on all levels within the Foundation. A professional style that is confident, collaborative and effective.
Interest in the Field: An understanding of the world of philanthropy either as a grant maker or leader in a large grant-making, think tank or nonprofit, including institutions of higher education. Experience in the formulation of public policy on domestic and international matters is attractive; however s/he does not need to be a substantive expert in any one area.
The Senior Advisor will have had at least 15 years of broad previous experiences in academia, mission-driven organizations or other relevant institutions.
