Head Start Teacher Assistant

Job Summary: 
This job is responsible for functioning as a member of the teaching team, which is responsible for the education and general development of children in a Head Start Center. Punctuality and attendance are critical to maintaining classroom continuity. Work with special needs children is also an important part of the job. 

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for setting up and maintains the education files for each child, evidence gathering and entry for specific children, and can plan and conduct learning activities for the classroom and under the guidance of the teacher individualize educational activities for special needs children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
Include the following, other duties may be assigned.

 1.Assists the teacher in creating an atmosphere in which children can learn and develop in the following areas: motor, cognitive, social-emotional, language and literacy.
 2.Establishes a rapport with the parents and caretakers of children in the classroom.
 3.Assists teacher in daily planning, classroom studies and related learning activities, interest areas, reading and math literacy activities.
 4.Conducts learning activities, storytelling and dictation, oral reading, arts and crafts
 5. Works with the teaching team in room set-up, classroom activities, nap time and meals.
 7.Encourages children to assist in set-up and clean-up, interest areas, activities and meals.
 8.Is responsible for the following documentation: meal attendance on a daily basis, weekly observations on assigned children, transfer of goals for children from continuum to Goal Plan, updating portfolios of children, writing accident/incident reports and reporting to parents.
 9.Supervises children during rest periods.
10.Assists in moving children through the daily routine and activities.
11.Prepares and distributes classroom materials.
12. In the absence of the teacher, is responsible for leading the daily routine, supervising the other teaching team members, home visits with Family Development Specialist, write/conduct Parent-Teacher conferences.
13.Is responsible for updating knowledge on early childhood education and child development through in-service training, continuing education and other professional development.
14.Is responsible for updating parents on progress and events at the end of the day, including Accident and Unusual Occurrence Reports. 
15.Is responsible for sweeping up floor areas, tables and equipment as needed to maintain sanitation and safety.
16. Other duties as assigned.

A.A. in Early Childhood Education. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. 

Language Skills: 
Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Computer Literacy & Knowledge Skills Abilities: 
Familiarity with computers. Programs may vary. Strong people skills: ability to express oneself clearly and effectively, superior interpersonal abilities, ability to get along with diverse persons and personalities, tactful, mature, flexible. Good reasoning abilities and sound judgments. 

Mathematical Skills: 
Math literacy skills: adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, ratios. 

Operating Environment and Working Relationships:
Works collaboratively and routinely with all areas of the Agency and staff. From time to time may be required to work on weekends and/or holidays.

Decision Making Authority: 
Exercises discretion and independent judgment in executing tasks.
